About the project

What is the BBHS OBA STEM Project?

A collaborative initiative by the BBHS Old Boys Association in the USA and Canada, designed to support STEM education and development at Baptist Boys' High School.

Purpose

What the project sets out to do

Modern laboratory practice

Move science from chalkboard theory to real experiments — properly equipped physics, chemistry and biology benches with reagents, glassware, safety gear and working fume extraction so every student performs practicals instead of only reading about them.

Equipment and safe infrastructure

Rewired power, stable lighting, solar/inverter backup, water supply, ventilation, secure storage and durable furniture — the unglamorous foundation that keeps donated equipment usable for a decade rather than a term.

Coding, robotics and engineering

A computer suite and maker corner with laptops, microcontrollers, sensors and 3D-printing basics, plus after-school clubs where boys build, break and rebuild real projects and enter national competitions.

Exposure to modern technology

Internet access, digital learning resources, virtual labs and simulations so students in Abeokuta see and use the same tools their peers abroad use — closing the exposure gap that holds bright pupils back.

Problem-solving education

Project-based learning where students identify a local problem — water, energy, waste, agriculture, health — and design a working prototype, building critical thinking, teamwork and presentation skills alongside exam results.

A global BBHS network

Live sessions, career talks and Q&A with old boys working as engineers, doctors, scientists and technologists across the USA, Canada, the UK and Nigeria — turning distant success stories into reachable role models.

Long-term mentorship

Structured, ongoing pairing of students with alumni mentors for guidance on subject choices, university applications, scholarships and early career decisions — relationships that continue long after graduation.

Sustainable infrastructure

A maintenance and consumables endowment, trained lab technicians, a documented inventory and annual audits, so the centre stays funded and functional instead of decaying after the launch photographs.
